The Detroit Red Wings will not renew the contract of Jeff Blashill, who just completed his seventh season as head coach.

Detroit finished with a 32-40-10 record (.451 points percentage) and were 26 points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, missing the playoffs for the sixth straight season.

The team also announced it would not bring back assistant coach Doug Houda and goaltending coach Jeff Salajko. Assistant coach Alex Tanguay remains with the Red Wings.

Los Angeles Kings forward Dustin Brown will retire after this season, his 18th with the club.

He made the announcement Thursday ahead of the Kings' regular-season finale. Los Angeles will face Edmonton in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.

The Chicago Blackhawks are hiring Jeff Greenberg, formerly with the Chicago Cubs, as their new associate general manager.

General manager Kyle Davidson confirmed the news to ESPN on Thursday, saying Greenberg will "help carry the Blackhawks into the next generation."

"It's the direction I always wanted to go," Davidson told ESPN, "To bring in that outside influence and expertise we don't have in-house, and someone that can bring the unique perspective of how a front office can be run. I'm excited to get his influence into our group. I think he can help push us into the area a lot of other sports are in right now, streamlining, modernizing and adding sophistication to the decision-making process, that hockey isn't necessarily at the level of, in my opinion."

The Golden Knights' second-half collapse to this season left them with wafer-thin playoff hopes, and those were snuffed out entirely on Wednesday in a 4-3 shootout loss to host Chicago.

Penguins CEO David Morehouse stepped down Wednesday, ending a 16-year run with the franchise that included three Stanley Cup titles.

Morehouse did not provide an explanation for his decision in a release. The Penguins changed ownership last fall when Fenway Sports Group bought the club from Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle.

"I'm confident that the Penguins' future is in good hands with Fenway Sports Group," Morehouse said in a statement.

Montreal Canadiens legend Guy Lafleur has died, the team announced Friday. He was 70.

No cause of death was given, but Lafleur had announced his most recent right lung cancer diagnosis in October 2020. He had previously had a cancerous lobe removed from his left lung in 2019.

"We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Guy Lafleur," Canadiens owner Geoff Molson said in a statement. 

The Arizona Coyotes have released season-ticket details for their 2022-23 season at Arizona State University's new 5,000-seat multipurpose arena, which they'll share with the ASU Sun Devils NCAA hockey program.

The Coyotes are moving to the ASU facility after their lease with the city of Glendale ended, forcing them to exit Gila River Arena after this season. 

The NHL is taking its 2022-23 season international, with regular-season games and exhibition contests scheduled for Finland, Czech Republic, Germany and Switzerland.

The 2022 NHL Global Series and 2022 NHL Global Series Challenge will feature the Nashville Predators, San Jose Sharks, Columbus Blue Jackets and Colorado Avalanche. It's the first time the NHL is playing regular-season games outside of North America since 2019.

New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal was fined $2,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct for making contact with a player on the ice while on the bench during Sunday night's loss at Toronto.

The NHL's department of player safety announced the supplemental discipline Monday.

The Seattle Kraken have added two minority investors in former Seattle Seahawks star Marshawn Lynch and Seattle-born rapper Macklemore.

Terms of the investment, announced on Monday, were not disclosed. Forbes most recently valued the Kraken at an estimated $875 million.

"This is something I never would have imagined," Lynch, who played seven of his 13 NFL seasons in Seattle, told CNBC in a statement.
